'This is the first wine made, but not the first wine released, from the Bannockburn 1314 range. Notoriously, the 2011 vintage in southern Australia was horrid, with never ending rain and a significantly cooler growing period. Many producers refused to make any 2011s, and those who did harvested early and made the best of a bad situation. Bannockburn made a new label, the 1314, in this year, using the fruit from their premium vineyards to make a declassified lablel. This Shiraz saw all the treatment fit for their higher end wines - 60% whole bunches, four weeks on skins and 12 months in oak before settling into older puncheons. This is an earthier, Pinot-esque Shiraz, with truffles, wet earth and pepper coming out. Light bodied, rather than medium, which will make a great alternative for those who don't like the heavier Shiraz of South Australia. A historic wine too.' AWC
