Yalumba, Barossa Valley SA, is a sixth generation estate that dates back to 1849.  Their estate vineyards are home to some of the oldest shiraz vines on the planet, planted in 1851.  Yalumba is one of only a few wineries in the world that maintain their own cooperage to produce their own barrels.  Their flagship Octavius Shiraz takes its name from the small 90-100 litre oak casks the Yalumba coopers create on-site and it is these ‘Octaves’ that lend their name to this iconic shiraz.
The Octavius 2018 saw a final make up of 69% Eden Valley and 31% Barossa Valley Shiraz. The tension and purity that is so evident in great Eden Valley wines leads the way in this release.
“The parcels of Eden Valley fruit with its tension, it’s tautness, it’s spice and its aromatics have given this a very complete, almost uplifting personality, It’s got a vibrancy and an intensity that allow it to have power with elegance all at the same time.”  Robert Hill Smith – Proprietor
“As soon as you look at the wine you can there a density to the colour. Then when you smell it, all the hallmarks of Eden Valley fruit come to the fore, it’s really an inviting wine.” Kevin Glastonbury
The 2018 Vintage for Barossa and Eden Valley has already demonstrated that this is an outstanding year.  So many of the 2018 wines we have seen at the AWC remain in our tasting memories as among the very best of that decade.  The Octavius 2018 will go down as one of the greats without doubt.
